Internship Program

McKee-Pownall began offering an internship program in 2022. This is extremely important at a time when the equine industry is suffering from a drastic decline in veterinarians.  Our ability to provide a good experience for an intern will help ensure that the equine veterinary industry has new practitioners entering the profession.

About the Program

Our internship program will involve two month-long rotations at each of our three clinics so the intern can gain a varied experience across our practice working with different doctors, cases, patients and clients. The rotations are scheduled based on caseload demands in each clinic.

Almost every veterinarian at McKee-Pownall has come through an internship program of some sort and we are excited to be able to give back to our industry by offering this program and give new veterinarians a great foundation for a career as an equine veterinarian that is professionally and personally fulfilling.

“ I would describe my internship experience so far as supportive and diverse. It can feel challenging at times, to do a lot of my learning in front of clients, but ultimately it pushes me to have more confidence in my knowledge and skills. I am really glad that I decided to do an ambulatory focused internship, I know it was the right choice for me.” - Dr. Ruby Chow McKee-Pownall 2022 Intern

Program Details

Our goal for the internship is to expose the intern to as many varied cases and appointments as possible, which will depend on our schedule and appointments that arise. Our program will educate the intern on how to function as an independent veterinarian and will encompass not just clinical competencies, but also communication with clients and colleagues along with the basics of practice management.  The program will provide experience and exposure to wellness, dentistry, performance horse medicine, advanced imaging, reproduction, horse show, podiatry and acupuncture/bodywork services on a wide variety of patients from the beloved pleasure horse to top-level racehorses, hunter/jumpers, eventers, dressage horses and western performance horses. We also have a board-certified specialist in equine practice on our veterinary team and work with a board-certified ophthalmologist and dentist regularly allowing for additional opportunities to gain exposure to these specialities.

At the beginning of the internship, the intern will be paired with an associate to shadow appointments giving them a general overview of equine practice and client communication. We will review the intern’s core competencies, skills and goals so that we can focus their training throughout the program.

As the internship progresses and depending on the intern and their mentor’s comfort level with their experience and skills, they will be scheduled for independent uncomplicated appointments such as vaccines, general health exams, and independent rounds at the rehab farm. Their training will focus on emergency services in preparation for independent on-call

On-call coverage responsibility will consist of 2 nights per week and 2 weekends per month. Initially, the intern will be shadowing the primary on-call veterinarian and then will transition to handling the emergency with the supervision of the primary on-call veterinarian and eventually handling emergencies independently.

Program Coordinators

Drs. Maggie Turner, Kate Robinson MVSc, DABVP (Equine Practice) COAC and Marisa Markey are the internship program coordinators and primary mentors. They will be responsible for coordinating and tracking the intern’s training and development.  The internship coordinators will meet monthly with the intern to provide feedback, review skills learned, and set goals for skill development.  All McKee-Pownall veterinarians will be expected to provide some degree of mentorship to the intern when the intern is scheduled to join them on cases.
