Straight From The Horses Mouth
A Case For Equine Dentistry
This 5-year-old Thoroughbred mare started to lose her final baby teeth as normal in the spring. However, the baby teeth never came all of the way out and instead the adult teeth were pushed back and came in with abnormal gaps. This is called “retained deciduous incisors”. It is important to have these teeth removed so that the gap can close while the mouth is still changing and this mare can have a normal dental alignment for the rest of her life. The teeth will continue to migrate back to their normal place now that the baby teeth are out of the way! This case is a great reminder that routine dental exams are a vital part of a horse's health care!
